Retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, who has been appointed to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, has an interesting history of proclaiming far-left positions and promoting conspiracy theories, including about the event he is investigating.

No mere unbiased observer, he has claimed that U.S. Capitol Police and Sergeant at Arms were “complicit” in the violence. Honore has not provided any proof of such an alliance.

He recently told MSNBC that “I was surprised that the Pentagon did not have those troops on standby. The FBI had a major failure in their intelligence.”

He went on to say that, “Once this all gets uncovered, there was complicit actions at the Capitol Police. A police chief has been fired, but now we need to look at a special investigation. Was he complicit, along with the Sergeant-at-Arms of the House and the Senate? It gives the appearance of complicity.”

Promoting Left Wing Conspiracy Theories

While Honore can certainly exercise his First Amendment rights like anyone else, there has been a bit of speculation that given the views he has made public, he probably isn’t the right person for what should be a non-partisan attempt to find out what happened on January 6.

Honore recently promoted a Twitter thread from a conspiracy analyst named Eric Garland, who claimed there might be a connection between the suicide of Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood, and former Trump associates Paul Manafort and Roger Stone.

Lt. Gen. Honore may not be qualified to investigate marches on Washington, given the fact that in August of 2020, he encouraged Veterans to march on Washington in response to yet another conspiracy theory.

In an article from the left-wing “Politics USA,” a conspiracy theory was pushed claiming that the Trump administration was engaged in “sabotage” of the United States Postal Service.

At a time when the USPS was trying to cut costs, some claimed that Trump was trying to prevent mail-in voting prior to the election.

Honore also put forth the idea that Trump was taking orders from Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the census before it was completed.

Honore proceeded to tweet that “Putin told the White House to stop #Census.”

Republicans Voice Opposition To Lt. Gen. Honore

Earlier this week, House Republicans objected to Honore’s appointment. Reps. Jim Jordan, Devin Nunes, James Comer, and Rodney Davis stated that he was appointed by Nancy Pelosi “without consultation of the minority.”

While Republicans do acknowledge that Honore reached out to them to brief them on his work to date, it has become clear through Honore’s own Twitter account that he is not enamored with the GOP, and clearly is not a supporter of Donald Trump.

Honore recently claimed that Missouri Senator Josh Hawley “should be run out of DC and barred ASAP.”

He also demanded the removal of President Trump from office via the 25th Amendment.

Honore also retweeted a conspiracy theory that Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) was trying to direct the Capitol rioters to Nancy Pelosi.

Perhaps one very telling tweet is one that depicts several Louisiana elected official as gas cans with the caption, “we have no idea how the fire started, with spilled gasoline spelling out the word “sedition.” The tweet is meant to blame Republicans for the violence on Jan. 6.

GOP Reps. Jordan, Nunes, Comer, and Davis may have reason to be concerned about the investigation into what happened on Jan.6.

The retired Lt. Gen. is welcome to his views and has the unqualified right to express them, however kooky.

But Nancy Pelosi should appoint someone who is neutral, and not a hard-left partisan if they are going to investigate a political crime.
