AOC Turns On Cuomo – Calls For Investigation Into His Nursing Home Scandal

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) turned on New York’s Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo on Friday, throwing her support behind an investigation into his handling of the coronavirus in New York state’s nursing homes.

“I support our state’s return to co-equal governance and stand with our local officials calling for a full investigation of the Cuomo administration’s handling of nursing homes during COVID-19,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement.

“Thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers lost their lives in nursing homes throughout the pandemic,” she added. “Their loved ones and the public deserve answers and transparency from their elected leadership, and the Secretary to the Governor’s remarks warrant a full investigation.”

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn launched investigations into the Cuomo administration after one of his top aide privately apologized to Democrat lawmakers for withholding the nursing home data, admitting that officials “froze” over concerns that the figures could “be used against us” in a federal investigation, according to the New York Post.

New York Lawmakers Turn On Cuomo

New York state lawmakers have since called for the emergency powers that were granted to Cuomo during the coronavirus pandemic to be stripped from him.

“While COVID-19 has tested the limits of our people and state — and, early during the pandemic, required the government to restructure decision making to render rapid, necessary public health judgments — it is clear that the expanded emergency powers granted to the governor are no longer appropriate,” the lawmakers said in a statement. 

“While the executive’s authority to issue directives is due to expire on April 30, we urge the senate to advance and adopt a repeal as expeditiously as possible,” they continued.

Rich Azzorpardi, a spokesperson for Cuomo, said in a brief statement this week, “As we publicly said, DOJ has been looking into this for months. We have been cooperating with them and we will continue to.”

Cuomo was hailed by the liberal media and the entertainment world for his leadership during COVID-19 for much of last year. His supporters have suddenly gotten very quiet in the wake of this scandal coming to light.
