Operations at the Hospital of the Sea in Naples, Italy, were also unaffected.

A residence for recovering Covid patients had to shut due to electricity cuts.

The fire brigade used dog units to check no one was trapped at the site.

Investigators said it could have been caused by a build-up of water from recent heavy rain.

The 20 metre deep, 2,000 sq metre sinkhole was said to have opened up at dawn on Friday.

Ennio Aquilino, the chief firefighting officer, told the Italian media the implosion could have been caused by an infiltration of water underground from the recent heavy rains.

The regional governor reportedly said the Covid-19 residence would reopen within days, after electricity and water services were restored.

Backup systems allowed care to continue at the hospital when those services were also interrupted.
